"GROUP 1" DECLARATION - aka "THE BIG 4" - The minimum declaration permitted

Those items measured but not included in the subtraction are sugars (as they are carbohydrates) and saturated fats (as they form part of the total "Fat" figure which is included in the subtraction)

** When one of these is declared, saturates must also be declared.

*** Only vitamins and minerals listed in the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 can be declared, and they must be present in significant amounts. An additional per serving or portion statement is required for the vitamins/minerals but not other nutrients.

Any nutrient not listed above can only be declared if a claim has been made about it, in which case its declaration becomes compulsory e.g. fructose or trans fatty acids.
