RECOMMENDATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF FOREIGN BODY SAMPLES

1. Analyses are performed both on the foreign body itself and any surface deposits. It is advantageous, that the sample is handled as little as possible prior to analysis, as previous handling and testing can alter the evidence present. Information regarding any previous handling or treatment of the sample also aids in the interpretation of the results attained
2. Submission of the product in which the foreign body was allegedly discovered and any associated product packaging can also provide further evidence regarding the sample's association with the product. Where possible, it is advantageous that samples be left in situ for examination
3. Additional information regarding the sample's history, if available, can also be useful, for example, when a sample has been in the mouth with food
4. Please ensure that your sample is adequately packaged to avoid loss during transit. Please mark for the attention of the Microscopy Section
5. It is best to avoid using sellotape to secure samples, as this can remove surface deposits and leave a sticky adhesive on the sample's surfaces
6. Where a source is suspected, a comparison sample can be supplied and will be analysed alongside the foreign body
7. If an urgent response is required, please telephone to alert us that the sample will be arriving
8. Please include information regarding any particular requirements, an order number if appropriate, and the contact details of the person/s the sample, report and invoice should be sent to.
